The role of the library at St Michael’s College is to help teach the research skills necessary to facilitate life-long learning and encourage students to enjoy reading. In doing this, the library staff support our Mission Statement:
‘With Christ at the Centre, our mission is to be a community where holistic learning and teaching occur in a Catholic Christian environment.’
Resource Centre services have therefore been an integral part of the community of St Michael’s since 1985.
Facilities to be found in the Resource Centre include:
- A research area for all students including 14 networked computer terminals, allowing internet access, library catalogue access, encyclopaedia access and colour printing facilities.
- Separate OPAC workstations which allow students to search the library catalogue.
- Work/study area for general research.
- Quiet reading areas.
- Computer classroom.
- Teacher Reference room including archives.
- Staff work areas.
The computerised catalogue allows access to the entire collection, which includes over 20,000 books, DVD’s, media kits, electronic files, audio CD’s, CD ROMs and websites.
All Year 8 classes attend library lessons where they learn how to find and make best use of the resources in the library including how to access the Oliver catalogue, and develop an enjoyment for reading. Other library-initiated programs include literature circles and wikis.
