The Campus Minister’s role at St Michael’s College involves encouraging and supporting the faith, spirituality, social justice and the community life of our students, in the light of our Catholic teachings. The Ministry Team works closely together, led by Assistant Principal Religious Education, Margaret Petherbridge (APRE), with the Campus Minister, and our Pastoral Care Youth Worker, Alissa Ternel- Picton. The Campus Minister supports and facilitates creative liturgy and prayer, social justice activities and outreach, Retreat and Spirituality Day experiences for students, faith groups and Catholic youth events.

As Campus Minister, I hope to empower our students to use their gifts and talents to serve others and make a difference in the world. Over the last couple of years I have been working with students to develop St Michael’s Liturgy Band. Students voluntarily help lead music for the liturgies and Masses and have led some moving and powerful music helping the school community engage more deeply with the meaning of the liturgy. Students really enjoy playing together and sharing their gifts with the school community.

A highlight of my Ministry Work has been growing our awareness of Indigenous Culture and justice for Aboriginal Australians. Each year I design the Year 9 Spirituality Day on the Naidoc theme, National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration. The day involves local Aboriginal Elders and educators who run inspiring and practical sessions on stories, cultural dance, craft and traditional artefacts. The morning begins with a Traditional Smoking Ceremony on the Chapel Lawn with 180 Year 9 students. It is a powerful and educational experience for all!

Another opportunity for students to help make a difference in our community is the St Michael’s Social Justice Group which meets weekly, on Tuesdays. New members are welcome. The Ministry Office, located in R Block, aims to be a welcoming space for students to chat and hang out, to connect with interesting Catholic events, social justice issues and hold small meetings.Alissa and I look forward to getting to know more students and supporting them to contribute to the great community of St Michael’s College.
